In the beginning.... History of the Garden

In the beginning…Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. (Genesis 1:11,29)

The Garden of Concord, an organic community garden, was first planted in
Eli Whitney, NC in May 2009 and has remained dedicated to the community as well as worked and shared by the community. No experience is necessary and all ages are welcome. All tools, seeds, plants, and instructions are provided.  We learn and grow together.  Membership is open to all people who want to work together to grow fresh healthy organic fruits, vegetables, and friendships.

The garden is a collective (not individual plots) community garden with over 50 varieties of seasonal produce planted in 60+ wide raised beds along with theme gardens, blueberry bushes, grapevines, strawberries, herbs, cut flowers, and so much more. We also have a shaded picnic area, children’s playground, bees, a greenhouse, a brick pizza oven, “how to” workshops, youth group projects, and many celebrations.

Operating under the basic principles of sustainable agriculture, our crops are grown without fertilizers or chemicals, relying instead on cover-cropping and the compost donated and what we make ourselves. All tasks, tilling, weeding, planting, etc. are done manually as we respect and commit to being good stewards of God’s creation.

Members join for only $25 per family per year with a commitment to work one hour per week for a share of the day’s harvest (sponsored membership's available provided by our Garden Angels). A portion of the daily harvest is also donated to our local food pantry, S.A.F.E. (Southern Alamance Family Empowerment) as well as any other neighbors in need within our community . Flexible work days include Tuesday and Thursday evenings along with Saturday mornings. The garden is always open for weeding and harvesting fresh herbs. Members (and non) of the garden contribute to the “feeding of the soil” by saving their kitchen waste in a lidded container provided and bring it to the garden weekly to add to the compost bin.

We offer “Garden Angel” memberships for those that cannot commit to work in the garden but want to support our growing efforts. These donations greatly enable us to further our mission of sharing the love of Christ through gardening with many by providing needed membership assistance to those wanting to work, along with helping pay for seeds and other needs.

Many hands make light work! Come grow with us…it WILL be good!
Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” (Genesis 2:8,15)
